El 19 de octubre se conmemora el Día Mundial de la Lucha Contra el Cáncer de Mama, es por ello que en el Hospital Santo Domingo se están desarrollando varias actividades que buscan concienciar sobre esta patología haciendo énfasis en las medidas de prevención y detección temprana.
Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) el cáncer es la principal causa de muerte en todo el mundo, en 2015 se atribuyeron a esta enfermedad 8,8 millones de defunciones, de ellas 571. 000 fuero a causa de cáncer mamario.
Las mujeres de más de 50 años y aquellas que presentan antecedentes familiares de cáncer deben realizarse una mamografía cada dos años, esto permite el diagnóstico del cáncer de mama en etapas tempranas, lo que hace que la enfermedad sea más tratable.
El autoexamen de mamas no es recomendado, pues no permite la detección oportuna de casos, pero sí la familiarización de cada mujer con sus mamas para detectar cambios antes de la fecha habitual de control.
Algunas personas no tienen ningún tipo de signos o síntomas. Una persona puede descubrir que tiene cáncer de mama por medio de una mamografía de rutina.
La ginecóloga Tania Pulido, tratante del Hospital General Santo Domingo, indica que las principales causas de advertencia del cáncer de mama son los siguientes:
- Un bulto nuevo en la mama o la axila (debajo del brazo)
- Aumento del grosor o hinchazón de una parte de la mama
- Irritación o hundimientos en la piel de la mama
- Enrojecimiento o descamación en la zona del pezón o la mama
- Hundimiento del pezón o dolor en esa zona
- Secreción del pezón, que no sea leche.
- Cualquier cambio en el tamaño o la forma de la mama.
- Dolor en cualquier parte de la mama.
El Hospital General Santo Domingo atendió a 51 pacientes con cáncer de mama durante 2016 y a 19 pacientes en lo que va de 2017, cuyos tratamientos son asumidos por el Sistema de Salud Pública.
